If you worked from home in 2020 as a result of COVID-19 you may eligible for additional tax deductions. The Canada Revenue Agency is Introducing a short, simplified Home Office Expense tax deduction for those who had to work from home due to COVID-19.

To qualify you would have had to work more than 50% of the time for a period of 4 consecutive weeks (minimum) due to COVID-19 to be legible to claim the Home Office Expense.

The flat rate is $2/day for each day worked at home plus any other days worked from home for a maximum home office claim of $400.00.

The process usually requires an employer issue a T2200 “Declaration of Conditions of Employment,” completed and signed by the employer.  You will not need to have this form completed or signed by the employer.

What does this mean for your taxes?  This tax deduction means you will be able to reduce the amount of income you pay on your taxes.
